DOI: 10.1177/002071528702800305 Father-to-Son Mobility in Australia and Japan: A Re-analysisThe Australian National University, Canberra, Australia An earlier comparison of mobility rates in Australia and Japan concluded that Japanese society became more open between 1955 and 1965. Even so, tendencies towards immobility remained greater in Japan than in Australia. A re-analysis using log-linear models qualifies these conclusions significantly. The degree of openness did not increase significantly in Japan over the decade concerned. Moreover, while immobility was lower in most social strata in Australia, there was no difference in farm immobility, and other differences were less marked than suggested by the earlier analysis. Notwithstanding these differences, there is a strong family resemblance in their stratification regimes, and their common features are more striking than their dissimilarities.
