However, it never molded itself into a force that could both initiate and legitimize social change. Javanese millenarianism reacted to social change by reenacting primeval models of order deemed effective in halting the dynamics of change. The present paper attempts to explain the above characteristics of Javanese millenarianism through: 1) the weak institutionalization of the conception of order; 2) the kind of relations postulated within it between man and cosmos and between the socio-political and the cosmic realm.
