Christian Utopias and Christian Salvation: A General Introduction

The paper explores the utopian moment at the core of Christianity as a world historical religion and its soteriological doctrines. It analyses the salvational doctrines of Christianity in terms of their transformation with the institutionalization of the Church and the emergence of utopian and millennial responses to this institutionalization. The growth of heterodoxies and alternative models of achieving salvation (both within and beyond the orders of the Church) are analysed in terms of the different articulation of millennial alter natives. Finally, a brief excursus on Teología de la Liberación attempts to place this move ment within the broader scheme of utopian alternatives developed within the Christian tradition.
