DOI: 10.1177/002071529803900301 © 1998 SAGE Publications Postmodernity and Family TheoryDepartment of Sociological Studies, University of Sheffield, England The paper argues that the evidence for a general trend towards a postmodern diversity is not strong. The current pattern of family change in a number of societies shows some increasing diversity in some respects but increasing homogeneity in others, and there appears to be no systematic relationship between family change and the degree of modernity. However postmodernist scepticism of existing models of change can be a valuable corrective to the overly schematic character of existing theories of family evolution.
